Seinen Namen hat der Prosciutto Amatriciano von der Gemeinde Amatrice in der Region, 138 km nordöstlich von Rom. Prosciutto Amatriciano ist seit 2011 EU-weit als geschützte geographische Angabe (g.g.A.) geschützt (PDF-Dokument).
